Changing your Apple Watch band is one of life's tiny pleasures — like getting a new pair of earrings, except your wrist gets the makeover. Whether you're swapping in a fresh floral print, a leather band for date night, or a sporty silicone for the gym, it takes about 10 seconds, no tools required. Below is everything you need to know — works on every Apple Watch from the original Series 1 all the way through the latest Series and Ultra.

If video's more your speed, scroll to the bottom — we've got short tutorials for everything below.

The 10-second version

  1. Hold your watch face-down.
  2. Press the band release button on the back of the case (there are two — one for each band half).
  3. Slide the old band out sideways. Don't pull straight down.
  4. Slide your new Fancy Band in sideways in the same direction until you hear a click.
  5. Repeat on the other side. Done. ✨

If you've got a couple of minutes, the full guide below covers troubleshooting, leather band sizing, link removal for steel bands, and how to figure out what size your watch is.

How to remove your old Apple Watch band (step by step)

  1. Lay your watch face-down on a clean, soft surface. A microfiber cloth or folded paper towel works perfectly. This protects the screen while you work.
  2. Find the band release button. Flip your watch over. You'll see two small oval buttons on the back of the case — one next to each band slot. They're the same color as the case, so look closely.
  3. Press one release button and hold it down. Use your thumb. You'll feel a small click when it depresses.
  4. Slide the band out sideways while holding the button. Don't pull straight down or away from the watch — slide it horizontally across the slot. The band should pop right out.
  5. Repeat for the second band half. Press the other release button and slide that side out the same way.

If the band won't budge, see the troubleshooting section below — it's almost always one of three small things.

How to install your new Apple Watch band

  1. Hold your new Fancy Band with the correct end facing the watch. Most of our bands have a "top" and "bottom" half — the half with the buckle, clasp, or longer strap usually goes at the top of the watch (the side closer to your hand when worn).
  2. Slide the band into the slot sideways, in the same direction the old band came out. You don't need to force it — if it doesn't slide easily, it's probably going in the wrong direction.
  3. Listen for the click. When the band locks in, you'll hear a small "snap." That means the spring-loaded mechanism has engaged.
  4. Tug gently to confirm. A quick downward tug should not pull the band loose. If it does, it's not seated — slide it back in until you hear the click.
  5. Repeat on the other side. Same direction, same click.

That's it. Your watch is officially Fancy.

Troubleshooting: when the band won't budge

Three things cause 99% of stuck bands:

  • You're pulling instead of sliding. Bands slide out sideways, not down. If you're tugging away from the watch, it'll never come off. Press the button, then push the band toward the side of the watch.
  • You're not pressing the release button hard enough. It needs to depress fully — like clicking a pen. Use your thumbnail if your finger isn't getting enough pressure.
  • Dust or fabric lint is jamming the channel. If the band has been on for months, lint builds up in the slot. A quick blast of compressed air (or a soft-bristled toothbrush) clears it right out.

How to remove links from a steel or Milanese band

Got a stainless steel link band that's too long? Most of our steel bands ship with extra links so you can size them yourself. You won't need any tools — most of our designs use a simple push-pin system.

  1. Lay the band flat on a soft surface, inside facing up.
  2. Find the small arrows stamped on the links — they indicate which direction to push the pin.
  3. Use a paperclip, a toothpick, or the little metal tool that ships with the band to push the pin in the direction of the arrow.
  4. The pin slides out and you can remove one or more links to shrink the band.
  5. To re-attach, line up the link openings and push the pin back in. It clicks into place.

How to shorten a leather Apple Watch band

Most of our leather bands are designed to use the included buckle for adjustment — you don't need to cut them. Just buckle on the hole that fits your wrist most comfortably.

If you've got a leather band without a buckle (a slim slip-on style), you can have a local cobbler shorten it for a few dollars. We don't recommend cutting it yourself unless you're confident with leather — once it's cut, it's permanent.

How do I figure out what size Apple Watch I have?

Two ways:

  1. Check the back of your watch case. Apple stamps the size right on the back of the case in tiny print — usually something like "41 mm" or "46 mm." That number is your case size.
  2. Use the Watch app on your iPhone. Open it, go to My Watch → General → About. The size shows up next to "Case Size."

Once you know your case size, our sizing guide tells you exactly which band connector family fits.

Quick compatibility note: If your case says 44 mm, 45 mm, 46 mm, or 49 mm, all of these use the same Large connector family. The Small connector family (38/40/41/42 mm) covers the smaller cases. Match your case size to the right family and you're set.

Frequently asked questions

Will my band fit the latest Apple Watch?

Yes — band compatibility is based on case size, not series number. As long as you pick the right connector family for your case size, the band will fit any Apple Watch with that case size.

Do I need any tools to swap bands?

Not for the band swap itself — it's a 10-second slide-out. Some steel link bands need a tiny push-pin tool to add or remove links, and if your band needs one, it ships in the box. Many of our bands don't require a tool at all.

Can I swap bands multiple times a day?

Absolutely — the connector mechanism is built for it. Apple designed the watch to encourage daily band swaps, so the slots are durable. Swap as often as you like without wearing anything out.

My band feels loose after installing — is that normal?

A small amount of lateral wiggle is normal (silicone and nylon bands flex a bit). But if you can pull the band straight off the watch, it's not seated properly — slide it back in until you hear the click.

Do Fancy Bands work with the Apple Watch Ultra?

Yes! Any band labeled 42mm/44mm/45mm/46mm/49mm in our catalog fits the Apple Watch Ultra (49 mm case). The Ultra uses the same connector standard as the rest of the Apple Watch line.

Can I return or exchange if I order the wrong band?

Yep — free US exchanges within 30 days. Email us at customer-support@fancybands.net and we'll send you the correct size or a different style. For full details (including international and refund options), see our Returns & Exchanges page.
